1.
Check your car’s tyre pressure. Poorly inflated tyres cause your engine to
work harder and use more fuel.
2. Save fuel when driving by accelerating and braking
smoothly. Gradual changes in speed save fuel and reduce stress on engine and
brakes.
3. Use cruise control on highways to maintain a constant
speed and improve fuel efficiency.
4. Driving at moderate speeds (typically around 55-65
mph) is more fuel-efficient than high speeds.
5. Turn off the engine if you're stopped for more than a
minute. Modern engines consume less fuel when restarted than idling for
extended periods.
6. Avoid excessive use of air conditioning as this uses
fuel.
7. Drive in the highest gear possible without straining
the engine. Higher gears are more fuel-efficient.
8. Plan your routes to avoid congestion and reduce time
on the road. Combine errands into a single trip.
9. Remove unnecessary items from the car to reduce
weight. Avoid carrying heavy cargo unless necessary. Excessive weight puts more
strain on the engine, brakes, and suspension.
10. Use the recommended grade of motor oil and fuel for
your vehicle.
11. Be more organised and do all your errands in one day. There may be times when using a car is unavoidable but if you can combine these trips so much the better. Visit Aunt Jane on the way to or from the shops. If you drop in on the way, she may want to go with you - so you save her travel miles too. Try to schedule appointments consecutively so you do not make unnecessary trips and waste fuel.
The eco-friendly life. You don’t have to be perfect but if everyone did what they could, what a different world it would be.
