Email spam is not only dangerous - full of scams, viruses and Trojan horses - but also uses an astonishing 33 TWh of electricity a year. That figure meant nothing to me but according to anti-virus software firm McAfee it is the equivalent of electricity used by 2.7 million US homes. The firm says more than 80% of the world's email traffic is now spam.
I know it's difficult, if not impossible, to stop spam, but part of the electricity usage is people checking the email junk box, opening spam and deleting it. My gmail automatically deletes spam after 30 days. So now I look at the spam folder to make sure nothing has gone in there by accident and then do absolutely nothing. To protect yourself from the nasties and to save energy, never open a spam email.
Apart from spam there are also all those websites you subscribe to. I have recently unsubscribed to sites whose emails I rarely look at. If everyone in the world did these few simple things it would save huge amounts of energy and prevent equally-large emissions of CO2.
The eco-friendly life. You don’t have to be perfect but if everyone did what they could, what a different world it would be.
